US Honeycomb Map

A US honeycomb map is a geographic visualization that uses equal-sized hexagons to represent each U.S. state, arranged in roughly the same shape as the continental map. Unlike traditional geographic maps, this approach eliminates distortion caused by varying state sizes, giving each state equal visual weight.

It’s particularly effective when displaying state-by-state metrics that benefit from clear, uniform comparison, such as:

  • election results
  • regional sales performance
  • policy adoption rates

Honeycomb maps make complex geographic data more accessible, helping users interpret trends nationwide without the distraction of geographic scale or empty space.

Creating a US Honeycomb Map

To create a US Honeycomb Map,

  1. Select data to display
  1. Choose your calculation
  1. Customize unit and color settings (optional)

Select data to display

State Column

Select a column that contains US state names

Value Column

Choose a numeric column to define the values that will be visualized on the honeycomb map. These values determine the intensity of color shading for each state. Higher or lower values will result in darker or lighter shades, depending on your selected color scale.

πŸ’‘

Make sure the column contains numerical data. Text or categorical fields won't be displayed correctly on the map.

You can also use this column in combination with a selected calculation method (e.g., sum, average, or percentage) to determine how the data is aggregated per state.

Choose your calculation

Calculation Method

Define how the values should be aggregated for each state. When multiple entries exist for the same state, this setting controls how those values are combined into a single number for visualization. Choose the method that best fits how you want to interpret and display your data.

  • Sum
  • Percentage
  • Average
  • Median
  • Minimum
  • Maximum
