Heatmap Chart

The Heatmap Chart visualizes the relationship between two categorical dimensions using color intensity to reveal patterns, peaks, and anomalies at a glance.

The Heatmap Chart makes tracking volume-based data like support ticket volume by team and day, comparing sales performance across regions and products, or identifying usage patterns over time, making high and low values immediately obvious. Available in a flat tile grid or a range of radial arc shapes, the Heatmap Chart adapts to your data story and your dashboard layout.

Apply conditional coloring with a meaningful range to ensure the color gradient accurately reflects your data distribution.

Installation and configuration

The Radial Heatmap plugin can be installed by an Admin, following the directions in Installing QBeeQ Plugins.

Operating system and version support:

  • Linux - Latest
  • Windows - Latest

Creating a Radial Heatmap

To create a new Radial Heatmap:

  1. Choose QBeeQ Radial Heat from the widget dropdown list
  1. Select data for the x-axis, y-axis, and values
  1. Apply conditional coloring
  1. Configure settings

Select data

Use the data panel to select columns to display on the x-axis and the y-axis of your chart. Next, select a column to display values.

For best results, use dimensions with a manageable number of distinct values on each axis. Very high cardinality on either axis can make the chart difficult to read.

Apply conditional coloring

By default, the heatmap will display in a single color until you define a color range.

  1. Click the conditional coloring option on the values data pane
  1. Select Manual configuration
  1. Configure the color range based on the options available

Chart shapes

The Heatmap Chart supports multiple shape configurations, ranging from a flat tile grid to a variety of radial arc styles. Select the shape that best fits the story your data is telling and the space available on your dashboard.

In Tile Mode/Flat, data is displayed as a standard rectangular grid, ideal for straightforward cross-tabular analysis.

The radial shapes (30° through 360°) bend the chart into an arc or full circle, which can be useful for cyclical data or compact dashboard layouts.

Row and column totals

Enable Display Row Totals to add a summary column on the right side of the chart showing the aggregated sum for each row.

Enable Display Column Totals to add a summary row at the bottom showing the sum for each column.

ℹ️

Both options are available only when the chart is set to Tile Mode/Flat shape.

When either totals option is enabled, use the Row/Column Fill Color setting to customize the background color of the totals cells, helping them stand out visually from your data cells.

Cell values

Enable Display Cell Values to show the formatted data value inside each cell of the heatmap.

ℹ️

This setting is available only when the chart is set to Tile Mode/Flat shape.

This is useful when the color encoding alone isn't sufficient for precise reading, for example, in printed reports or dashboards where users need exact figures at a glance. This setting is available only when the chart is set to Tile Mode/Flat shape.

When cell values are displayed, use the Cell Values Text Color setting to ensure the text is legible against your chosen conditional color range.

Tooltips

Viewers can hover over any cell to display a tooltip. The tooltip will include the values from the data selected for the X-axis, Y-axis, and Value.

Limitations

  • The Heatmap Chart does not support Click-to-Filter or JTD.
  • Chart-native tooltips are enabled by default and cannot be disabled.
