Variable Radius Pie Chart
When dealing with datasets that involve both categorical proportions and variable magnitudes, traditional pie charts can fall short, masking nuanced differences and oversimplifying key insights. Users often struggle to compare values when all slices are the same radius, making it hard to distinguish between categories that may be similar in percentage but drastically different in actual volume or importance.
A variable radius pie chart solves this by scaling each slice not just by angle but also by radius, allowing the viewer to instantly grasp both proportional relationships and relative magnitudes.

Installation and configuration
The Variable Radius Pie Chart plugin can be installed by an Admin, following the directions in Installing QBeeQ Plugins.
Operating system and version support:
- Linux - Latest
- Windows - Latest
Creating a new Variable Radius Pie Chart
To create a new Variable Radius Pie Chart:
- Choose QBeeQ Pie Chart Radius from the widget dropdown list
- Select data as Category, Slice % Value, Radius Value
- Configure settings
Select data
Use the data panel to select data to display on the chart:
- Category - The dimension used to break down the pie. Each unique value creates a separate slice.
- Slice % Value - This defines how much each slice contributes to the whole pie (e.g., percentage or value).
- Radius Value - Controls the size (radius) of each slice, allowing for variable-sized wedges.
Configure settings
Setting | Description | Options |
Animation | Enables smooth transitions and entrance effects for the widget | On, Off |
Themes | Defines the background color of the widget | Dark, Light |
Labels | Toggles the display of data labels on the widget | On, Off |
Legend | Controls the position of the legend relative to the widget | Top, Bottom, Left, Right |
Using the Variable Radius Pie Chart
Tooltips
Viewers can hover over each slice to view a tooltip containing:
- Category
- Slice % Value
- Radius Value

Click to highlight or dim
Viewers can click on items in the legend to focus attention to specific slices. When you click a category, its slice stays visible but dims to help you visually de-emphasize it. Click again to bring back its original color and emphasis. This allows users to selectively highlight or de-emphasize specific data segments without fully filtering them out, making it easy to highlight what matters without removing anything from view.
